Market Wrap for 2010 - looking to the Next Decade

1. The Australian stock market was flat in 2010

2. Any stock market provides good medium term trading opportunities on the short and long sides during the year.

3. The Australian market is currently in a strong six-month up-trend.

4. In 2010, the best performing S&P Sector was the Materials Sector.

5. The Cyclic Effect of the Third Year of the Presidential Cycle suggests further upside in stocks for most of 2011 (with a drop off in the fourth quarter).

6. Don’t expect the dominant asset themes of 2000-2010 (BRICs) to dominate 2010-2020.

7. Old Economy stock markets (Japan, Germany, USA) outperformed China in 2010.

8. Australian Trade is highly diversified and an unexpected shock or down-turn to one of its major trading partners is unlikely to have a major knock-on effect to the Australian economy.

9. While Governments around the world are determined to ward off deflation, maintain financial stability, and provide the liquidity needed for economic expansion, a major stock market correction is unlikely. (The American Fed is just one example.)

10. Based on this analysis, the general trend of the Australian stock market in 2011 should be an improvement on the flat performance in 2010.

11. Expect the unexpected. Jack be nimble, Jack be quick.
